7/21   Monday 6:30pm

Filmmaker Candy Jones will be in attendance for a discussion following the screening, along with a performance of music by Indigifem, with Larry Mitchell.

Native NM filmmaker Candy Jones takes us on an entertaining 60-year tour through New Mexico's nuclear history, in this documentary which chronicles the development of the atomic industry in New Mexico and the cultural, economic, environmental and health legacy of developing, testing and storing nuclear weapons. Jones playfully begs us to review New Mexico's nuclear history while being mindful of what she calls THE BIG THREE: DENIAL, DECEPTION, and CREATIVE COMMUNICATION.   From Trinity to Hiroshima, from the world's only underground  nuclear repository to a new plutonium bomb factory, our narrator asks us to take the tour -- if not for ourselves, then for her Uncle Graham: a distinguished state legislator during New Mexico's  pioneer days.

DISCOVERING BUDDHISM: Parts 1, 2 & 3

(US, 2007, 90 min.)

 7/27   Sunday  4:15pm

7/29   Tuesday 8:15pm

DISCOVERING BUDDHISM is an engaging introduction to the tenets of Mahayana Buddhism, led by eminent Tibetan lamas and experienced Western teachers.  The series features His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Ribur Rinpoche, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, and other Tibetan Lamas. Western teachers in the Discovering Buddhism video series include, Ven. Robina Courtin, Ven. Sangye Khadro, Ven. Thubten Chodron, and others.

This week is a screening of Parts 1-3 of a 13-episode series, with the additional episodes screening in upcoming weeks.  Each of the thirteen 30 minute segments is introduced by Richard Gere or Keanu Reeves.

Over 2500 years ago, Shakyamuni Buddha gained direct insight into the nature of reality, perfected the qualities of wisdom, compassion, and power, and revealed the path to his disciples. In the 11th Century, Atisha brought these teachings to Tibet in the form of the lam-rim – the stages on the path to enlightenment. The lam-rim tradition found its pinnacle in the teachings of the great Tibetan saint Lama Tsongkhapa in the 14th Century, and these teachings continued to pass from teacher to student up to this present day.

When Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche transmitted these teachings to their disciples, they imparted a deeply experiential tradition of study and practice, leading thousands of seekers to discover the truth of what the Buddha taught. This tradition is the core of DISCOVERING BUDDHISM.

Follow the journeys of linguists documenting the world’s most endangered languages.  The stories told in THE LINGUISTS - sad, scary, even hilariously funny - reveal how the loss of a language affects us all.

"A fascinating journey with two men who are the Indiana Joneses of language hunters, academics who go to obscure corners of the globe to find and preserve disappearing languages.” - The Los Angeles Times

In a time when over 7,000 distinct languages are spoken around the world, professors David Harrison and Gregory Anderson navigate treacherous terrain and travel to the furthest reaches of the globe to research forgotten and hidden languages. As colonialism and economic unrest spread, the new generations begin to abandon their ancestral languages, and their cultures are passively suppressed. But their legacy is not lost thanks to Harrison and Anderson, and now amateur linguistics can follow along as these two adventurous ethnographers observe a Kallawaya healing ritual in Bolivia, attend a traditional ceremony in a remote village in India, and set their sights on Siberia to document these languages before they are lost forever. Together, Harrison and Anderson speak over twenty-five languages, and though their mission is a serious one, they always attempt to maintain a sense of levity as they explore how disappearing languages serve as an indicator of the disappearing traditions and heritage of Indigenous people everywhere. Who needs reality?  Enter a world of total fantasy in the company of a dragon-slaying band who surrender completely to game-playing!  MONSTER CAMP is a documentary focusing on that wacky, bizarre, yet somehow endearing world of fantasyland where humans pretend, well, that they are not human.

We are talking worlds beyond Dungeons & Dragons here.  These are the people who become their characters through costume, name and identity.  They are escaping their daily lives in favor of one far more fantastical and adventurous.  MONSTER CAMP focuses on one impassioned group in Seattle, where participants devote 48 hours to their quests.  For one weekend each month, these software engineers, department store managers and high school students become warriors, sorcerers, dwarves and even lizard people.  This is the world where imagination and creativity reign!

ANTHONY: WARRIOR OF GOD follows the life of Anthony of Padua (1191?-1231) from his arrival on Sicily's shores via shipwreck in 1221 to his death.  Anthony is a Portuguese monk who, once in Italy, seeks out St. Francis. Anthony’s gift as a great preacher is soon discovered by happenstance. He spends much of his life in and near Padua, a city run by usurers. Anthony offers protection and friendship to Folco, at one time a petty criminal and acolyte for the usurers, later falsely accused of murder. Anthony's strength of character and his teachings lead to changes in the character of Padua and the end of usury. Anthony became Padua’s patron Saint soon after his death.

IN SEARCH OF THE FUTURE

IN SEARCH OF THE FUTURE is an inspiring vehicle for change in the evolution of spiritual awareness.  The film is artistically beautiful, and reminds one that in beauty is Truth.” - Lynn Andrews, bestselling author and spiritual teacher

IN SEARCH OF THE FUTURE is a bold and uplifting synthesis of information and ideas, alchemically blending ancient prophecy, indigenous wisdom and quantum science.  This groundbreaking multi-cultural film continues in the “nature-of-the-universe” genre pioneered by WHAT THE BLEEP DO WE KNOW and THE SECRET.  It brings a new understanding of reality and provides keys to a positive future.

Filmed in southern Africa in the "Cradle of Humankind", the Kalahari Desert, the remote highlands of Mexico, and the mountains, deserts and cities of North America, this one-of-a-kind documentary asks just two questions of the visionary elders of a dozen diverse cultures: "Where did we come from, we humans?" and "Where are we going, where is humanity headed?"

THE MAN OF TWO HAVANAS

(US, 2007, 93 min.)

7/22   Tuesday 8:15pm

7/24   Thursday 8:15pm

Vivien Weisman’s explosive documentary exposes a reign of violence and terror within Miami’s Cuban exile community.  The filmmaker describes THE MAN OF TWO HAVANAS thusly:

“Okay, here’s the situation. I was born in Havana. That makes me Cuban. But, I was raised in little Havana, which makes me Cuban-American. However, since I don’t see Castro as the root of all evil in the universe, nor would I strangle him with my bare hands given the opportunity, I am a little out of step with my tribe. I always have been. And I really don’t care.”

“My dad, on the other hand, does care. He cares a great deal. Back in Havana he was a revolutionary and fought alongside Castro for the freedom of the Cuban people. Then he had a falling out with his old friend and it was Miami, here we come. But his animosity towards Castro did not last and he soon wanted dialogue with the Cuban government. Perhaps, to live in peace.  That’s when the shit hit the fan. Bombings, death threats and drive by shootings were a daily occurrence in our home.”

“But who would do this to us? We were Americans. Surely, it must be the Communists, right? Wrong. My father became the focal point of the anti-Castro terrorists. These are Americans, people, like you and me. Well, not exactly. They were trained by the CIA.”

“What most Americans don’t know is that terrorism in America did not begin on September 11th. In the 1970s and 1980s, there was a reign of terror in Miami. There were as many as seven bombings in one day and hundreds per year. The culprits were not Communists. They were Americans. And my family was at the epicenter. Bombs away…”
