NOVEMBER 16. 2009

SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO

Ranked No. 3 in the country by Variety Magazine for being among the best places to make movies, New Mexico is steadily becoming a premier location to watch them too.

Santa Fe Film Festival - which runs December 2-6, 2009 - celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. Festival organizers have set their sights on becoming a world-class festival. “Building on the New Mexico film industry’s exciting momentum, we’re working to create a festival that may one day take its place alongside international counterparts like Toronto and the Sundance Film Festival," the festival’s new operations director Karen Redhawk Dallet said.

According to New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, “The Festival is emerging as one of the more distinguished film festivals both nationally and internationally." New Mexico’s film industry has experienced tremendous growth thanks to Richardson’s generous film incentive program as well as the new state of the art Albuquerque Studios – one the largest and most sophisticated professional stages in the country.

Oscar winning actor Tommy Lee Jones will be honored by the festival along with Oscar nominated actress Ellen Kuras and Santa Fe’s own Wes Studi. Mark Rydell, Director On Golden Pond and Inside Actor's Studio Director is to be honored with an award  as well as savvy character actor Dabney Coleman, actors John Carroll Lynch (Fargo, Drew Carey Show and Carnival) and Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) who will all to be in attendence to celebrate this anniversary season.

November 2009

The year the Santa Fe Film Festival has so much great news we are wondering where to begin. So let's just dive in !

In this 10th Anniversary year, Dec. 2 - 6, we are pleased to announce 115 independent films screening at 7 venues within downtown Santa Fe. Our collection of films reflect diverse stories that are, not only entertaining but riviting and at times, peer into a path of peoples lives while reflecting something within each of us. A central theme seems to have developed on its own as works this year focus on cultural diversity, family love, individual challenges, environmental awareness, immigration, international affairs, truth and the consequences of non-truths which have been masked, somethines for a lifetime. Humor, above all, has its role in this collection of films and laughter again proves to be the best medicine.

We are exceptionally pleased to announce this years Tributees: Lifetime Achievement Tributees are actor, producer WES STUDI and director, producer, actor TOMMY LEE JONES. MARK RYDELL director, producer, actor will receive our Luminary Award with the award winning cinematographer ELLEN KURAS accepting the Kodak Cinematographers Award.

ANNA GUNN (Breaking Bad) and JOHN CARROLL LYNCH (Drew Carey Show, Carnival (HBO Series), CSI , Fargo) will together host the MILAGRO AWARDS CEREMONY, December 5, Saturday night at 7pm at the National Dance Institute.

Ticket sales are available online this season which is new for the Festival. Our new box office location, at 115 Old Santa Fe Trail across from the Round House and in the same center as Kaunes's Market, opens Friday, November 13 at 9am for that personal attention the box office staff so loves giving.

Our poster and signature image has been a fun design for us. Joel Nakamura, local Santa Fe artist who honors storytelling through mythology in his images, created this happy blue frog who loves to devour film and your stories. We know, all eyes are on film in New Mexico so this fantastic image of that cool blue guy chomping on real film makes us happier than ever. We know you're smiling, too.

The workshops and panels are industry specific and includes major studio and industry involvement. These tremendous programs coupled with our party sponsors: CowGirlBBQ, Corazon, Fusion, The Ore House on the Plaza, San Francisco Bar and Grille and Milagro 139 will have you dancing the chilly night away with bands galore.

There are enough films ot knock your socks off, you'll cuddle-up in some of Santa Fe's nicest theatres venues and want to keep watching more.

We would like to thank our new sponsors this season who, with the stronghold of returning partners, know that without their belief in film in New Mexico and the Santa Fe Film Festival, this event would not be possible. Thank you each and every one.

TAOS TALENT HAS DOUBLE SCREENING AT SANTA FE FILM FESTIVAL

Rick Aragon has been called a Renaissance man, and with good reason. Next week, Aragon will attend the Santa Fe Film Festival for the screenings of two films, a live-action movie in which he had a co-starring role and an animated short for which he won the 2008 Governor’s Cup Animation Documentary Competition, funded by the National Geographic All Roads Film Project. Aragon is the second Taos winner of the Governor’s Cup Award, preceded by Rick Romancito in 2006.

On Thursday, December 4, "Taos" will screen at 3:45 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Temple (463 Paseo del Peralta). "Taos"is the story of John Wahlberg (Rib Hills), a corporate attorney who is sidetracked into a new life when he finds himself stranded in Taos. Aragon plays Rafael Archuleta, a local mechanic who helps John understand that life’s journey is perhaps more important than its destination.

On Friday, December 5, an excerpt from Aragon’s first animated short, "Coyote Tales: Mystery’s Night," will air during the Southwest Showcase at 7 p.m., also at the Scottish Rite Temple. Based on one of Aragon’s original songs, "Mystery’s Night," follows the clever trickster Coyote, who has one thing on his mind: being with the one he loves for a single magical night.

The reason an excerpt rather than the entire film is being screened, Aragon explains, is that "Mystery’s Night" is a work in progress.

"I have some experience in animation," Aragon says, "but it dates back more than 15 years, and animation software has come a long way in a decade and a half."

He won the Governor’s Cup Award based on a manuscript of the story, a recording of the song "Mystery’s Night," and a set of storyboards.

Earlier this fall, Aragon completed filming his role in "Descansos," an independent film by Albuquerque writer-director Chris Roybal.

Locally, Aragon is well known as a Native American flute player and singer, but he is enjoying the new tack his artistic career has taken.

"Filmmaking is something I’ve been interested in since I was a kid and my friends and I shot Westerns with a Super 8," he says. "The affiliation with the Governor’s Cup and National Geographic is more than I could have imagined back then. The great thing about film these days is that you don’t have to be in Hollywood, whether you’re interested in acting or being behind the camera. The film industry is a growing part of New Mexico’s economy, thanks in large part to the New Mexico Film Office."

NEW AWARD FOR 2008

International Film Guide Inspiration Award

A new Filmmaker Award has been announced that will be given to emerging filmmakers at a series of upcoming film festival events. The International Film Guide Inspiration Award, presented by Wallflower Press (www.wallflowerpress.co.uk), the largest independent film book publisher in the UK, and the Criterion Collection (www.criterion.com), the leading distributor of classic world cinema, is a unique prize of film books, reference guides and film DVDs designed to provide emerging filmmakers at the start of their careers with inspiration from some of world’s most iconic filmmakers, including Federico Fellini, Francois Truffaut, Fritz Lang, Ingmar Bergman, Alfred Hitchcock, Jim Jarmusch, Akira Kurosowa, Jean-Luc Godard, Todd Haynes, Terrence Malick, Mike Leigh, Roman Polanski, Chris Marker, Ang Lee, Werner Herzog, David Lynch, Lars von Trier and Lindsay Anderson.

The International Film Guide Inspiration Award is part of the renaissance of the International Film Guide, a yearbook publication that covers the world of independent and international cinema, which is celebrating its 45th year with a January 2009 publication date. The Guide, a comprehensive 450-page book, offers a world survey of over 125 countries, as well as special focuses on the worlds of film festivals, new media and other topics of interest to film professionals, academics, programmers and cinephiles.

The inaugural International Film Guide Inspiration Award will be given to an emerging Canadian feature filmmaker at the Vancouver International Film Festival (www.viff.org) on Saturday, October 4 in the city of Vancouver, Canada. With over 100 Canadian films being shown at the event, the Award will help distinguish one of Canada’s rising young film talents.

The Award will then be given just two weeks later on Canada’s other coast, in the historic city of Montreal, as part of the celebrations of the Festival du Nouveau Cinema (www.nouveaucinema.ca). That prize will be given to an emerging short filmmaker from the province of Quebec. The Festival is renowned for its program of cutting-edge cinema, including film shorts, video art and digital short form.

In November, the International Film Guide Inspiration Award will be given at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (www.fliff.com), one of the nation’s most respected regional film festivals. With American independent cinema one of its chief focuses, the Award will be bestowed on an emerging American Indie feature filmmaker, with a film screening at the prestigious festival.

The final International Film Guide Inspiration Award of the year will be given to one of the last film festivals on the busy festival calendar. The Santa Fe Film Festival (www.santafefimfestival.com), which takes place the first week of December, has become a major destination event. Drawing on local audiences and the nearby Southern California film scene, the Festival is a six-day celebration of impressive new visual talents. The Award will be given to an emerging Documentary or cutting edge Narrative Filmmaker with a film screening at the festival.

The Award at each Festival will be determined by either by the Festival Programming Committee or as part of the Festival’s existing Competition Juries. Honorees will be chosen based on the “unique visual style, daring content and expansive execution” of a film from an emerging filmmaker screening at the respective festival. The Award itself will include both the 2008 and 2009 editions of the International Film Guide, a collection of books from various Wallflower Press series and a library of 10 classic DVDs drawn from the Criterion Collection of world cinema masterpieces, with a combined cash value of $2500.

In addition, a profile of the winning Filmmaker and his/her Film will be included in the printed 2009 edition of the International Film Guide and on the sister website (www.internationalfilmguide.com), which will be launching in late October 2008. Plans are in place to present the Award at nearly a dozen film festival events around the world in 2009.

“We’ve wanted to work with film festivals to recognize new talents for a long time now”, Wallflower Press publisher Yoram Allon explained. “But rather than simply offering a cash prize, we felt it would ultimately be more meaningful to the filmmakers to provide them with a unique award….one that would provide inspiration, insight and helpful tools at the start of their careers. What better mentors to these new filmmakers than the classic directors of world cinema?”

Santa Fe Film Festival
Announces its 9th Annual Festival Events
For December 3 – 7, 2008

(Santa Fe, New Mexico) The Santa Fe Film Festival (SFFF), announces its Ninth Annual five-day event to take place Wednesday December 3rd – Sunday December 7th. Building on the successes of its first eight seasons, the SFFF gathers its programming, through the growing number of submissions and new partnerships, of international films and important and entertaining documentaries while strengthening its support of independent filmmakers. The SFFF is expanding its educational outreach, through new partnerships and guest panelists while growing its social and networking opportunities.

Last year, over 21,000 tickets were sold to an estimated 7,200 patrons from Santa Fe, the surrounding communities in New Mexico, the Southwest region and across the country and world. Increased attendance is expected this year, as outreach expands.

National Geographic returns as a program partner with its All Roads Film Project, bringing about fifteen films from indigenous cultures, representing various countries of the planet. They will also present their annual photographic exhibit. All Roads takes place in Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., prior to the partnership with the SFFF.

These rarely-shown films will be screened with presentations from experts at SMU and other academic institutions.

From the nearly 1,000 submissions, over 150 features and shorts will be selected for the five categories: Independent Spirits, showcasing an array of the best in the American filmmaking from the crop of mostly digitally shot movies which grow each season in quality; Art Matters, showcasing films of all genres from around the world that celebrate the artistic and creative process of music, visual art, theater, film, and more; Making it Reel, featuring documentaries on varied topics including social issues, love, aging, politics, the human condition and much more; Eye on the World, shining a light on films of all genres from over 30 countries; and the Southwest Showcase, spotlighting films from New Mexico and surrounding states, including US and World Premieres.

Over 200 filmmakers are expected to attend, including: industry veterans, independent artists, and shorts filmmakers. As a presentation of the Santa Fe Film Festival, the New Mexico Film Expo launches the SFFF´s efforts to stage New Mexico films, panels, and workshops year-round, as a companion to our year-round cinema. We are starting a program October 6th, to continue the first Monday of each month, to highlight New Mexico film with screenings of films selected to inspire audience feedback.  We also plan, in 2009, to stage panels and workshops for New Mexico filmmakers, in conjunction with the Film Office, the Film Museum, and other organizations which share our mission to promote and support New Mexico Film.

During the NM Film Expo, audience reactions and constructive feedback are encouraged.  One of the goals of this expo is to strengthen our sense of a community of New Mexico filmmakers working together to make great films and share them with one another. This Expo offers us all a chance to share our work, get feedback and to network and meet one another and find lifelong working partners and friends.
